For the first time since the pandemic, the University Wind Orchestras of Oxford and Cambridge are coming together to perform in a Varsity concert, combining music in an exciting variety of styles and from a wide range of composers.
Under the baton of Tammas Slater, Cambridge University Wind Orchestra will perform a selection of wind band repertoire by British composers which spans the 20th century, ranging in style from Holst’s ‘Hammersmith’ to Hart’s ‘Cartoon’.
Oxford University Wind Orchestra’s programme brings together sci-fi and soundtracks, showcasing the film music titan, John Williams, alongside Shuying Li’s ‘The Last Hive Mind’, an exciting contemporary piece inspired by the sci-fi programme, Black Mirror. OUWO’s assistant conductor, Theo Andre-Watson, takes the orchestra through Williams’ ‘Jurassic Park’, followed by principal conductor, Alice Knight, who conducts both Li’s ‘The Last Hive Mind’ and the final piece in this year’s Varsity Concert: ‘Star Wars’.
