Pas de trois: Gustav Mahler, Alexander von Zemlinsky and Alma Mahler
Vienna, 1890-1910. Secession, Modernism, Intellectualism, the Fin-de-Siècle… Alma Mahler lived in this enthralling era which shaped the future world as we know it today. Oxford Festival of the Arts invites you to a snapshot of this allure as we enter the lush soundworld with none other than mezzo-soprano, Dame Sarah Connolly, and pianist Joseph Middleton. We explore a pas de trios of exchanges with the music of Gustav Mahler, Alexander von Zemlinsky and Alma Mahler herself – a femme fatale in Vienna enchanting society and artists like Walter Gropius and Oskar Kokoschka and ultimately, of course, marrying Gustav Mahler.
The concert ties in with the Oxford Festival of the Arts theme for 2024 – MUSE. In this performance of intimate lieder and song cycles Alma Mahler will be seen not only as the muse, but as the creator.
The full programme will be announced shortly.
