Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem is among the best-loved and most performed musical works of the Renaissance. It is an intensely expressive portrait of grief, written for a Holy Roman Empress by her chaplain. Priest, organist and singer, Victoria preferred composition to performing and his use of voices in multiple layers vividly expresses the passion within Spanish mysticism and religion.
Opus 48 will be pairing this work, Victoria’s final composition, with wonderful works by some of his contemporaries including Morales and Lobo.
