Danny Driver has performed with orchestras across the globe and in recital at prestigious festivals including Southbank Centre’s International Piano Series, Music Toronto and San Francisco Performances. He appears regularly at Wigmore Hall, where in 2021-2022 he presented a concert series devoted to György Ligeti. Danny’s repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary and this breadth, combined with a musical curiosity and intelligence, makes for a vibrant attitude to programming.
For this concert, he brings a programme of variations. Thomas Adès ‘explosion’ of a John Dowland lute song; Handel’s suite with its Air and Variations 4th movement; Gabriel Fauré’s one and only set of variations, believed to have been inspired by his admiration for Schumann’s Symphonic Studies; technical wizardry and emotion coming thrillingly together in Ligeti’s Études; and finally the Symphonic Studies themselves, fifteen kaleidoscopically brilliant variations showing every facet of Robert Schumann’s splintered imagination. A first time for this piece in the Piano Series: it will be a treat to hear it.
‘Driver, as fleet of finger as this formidably challenging writing demands, has a mind that searches beyond contrivance; these are transfixing performances.’ The Sunday Times, review of Danny Driver’s Ligeti: The 18 Études (Hyperion).
