Angela Hewitt programmes a joyful celebration of the Baroque.
Occupying a commanding position on the international stage, Angela Hewitt is sought after as a solo recitalist and in collaboration with leading orchestras. She is also the founder and artistic director of Trasimeno Music Festival in Umbria. Her many awards include Companion of the Order of Canada; an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II, and the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig, given in recognition of a lifetime’s dedication to the music of J.S. Bach. We are delighted to be welcoming her back to the SJE Arts Piano Series.
Angela’s programme is a joyful celebration of the Baroque. A lovely Italianate suite by Handel, with more than a hint of the opera aria, is followed by Bach’s sparkling baroque dances. The Haydn sonata brings a change of mood: grand and spacious, it is his final piano sonata and generally accepted as his greatest. Post interval, Handel’s delightful Chaconne precedes Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel. The theme is the Air from Handel’s B-flat major harpsichord suite, a simple melody that Brahms teases and toys with through twenty-five kaleidoscopic and brilliantly structured variations. Brahms greatly admired Handel. This is a wonderful tribute.
